Have you ever wondered what the craziest thing that’s ever happened to you is? Close your eyes for a moment and reflect on it. Perhaps it was winning a substantial amount of money at the casino or receiving a life-changing promotion that led you overseas. Those are the kind of crazy experiences that are considered respectable and regular. But mine, well, it’s a little different. The craziest thing that’s ever happened to me occurred during my campaign for council elections when I discovered I had superpowers.

 

I can still vividly recall the day, as it was just yesterday. I had just concluded a productive meeting at Cherry Energy Solutions, a local business that had always supported my campaign endeavours. We engaged in a brilliant discussion about the advantages of solar power and how we could introduce more clean and renewable energy to our community. Exiting the store, I turned back to give the team a friendly wave when I heard the screeching of tires and a scream that pierced the air.

 

Time seemed to slow down as I frantically searched for the source of the commotion. My eyes locked onto a car veering off the road, hurtling directly towards me. In that split second, instinct took over. Without even thinking, I thrust my hand forward. Miraculously, the car came to a halt. In that moment, the commercial LED lighting in the surrounding stores flickered and dimmed. Confused smartphone owners witnessed a lack of notifications lighting up their screens. Even the occupants of the car stared at me in awe, their wide eyes reflecting fear and astonishment.

 

I glanced down at my own hand, transfixed by the extraordinary sight before me. It was emitting a soft, ethereal glow. An orange swirl, reminiscent of the rings of Saturn, danced beneath the surface of my skin on the right hand. When had it appeared? With a trembling finger, I cautiously reached out to touch it. To my surprise, it didn’t burn or cause any discomfort. It simply radiated an otherworldly energy.

 

After laughing off the adrenaline rush for the sake of onlookers and assisting the police in clearing the area, I returned home. Much to my amazement, the swirling pattern on my hand remained, serving as a constant reminder of the extraordinary power I possessed.

Bath and Back

Once upon a time, in a quiet neighbourhood of Sydney, lived an elderly gentleman named Bertie Bubbles. Bertie, known for his jovial disposition and love for soaking in the bathtub, led a simple life. Every evening, he would fill up his old bathtub with warm water, lay back and let the bubbles embrace him. It was his cherished routine, one he looked forward to all day.

But as time passed, Bertie’s agility waned. He found it harder and harder to manoeuvre himself into and out of the bathtub. The slippery tub was becoming a hurdle in his otherwise peaceful routine. Then came a day when he nearly slipped while getting out, jolting him to the realisation of the risks he was taking daily.

Reflecting on his near fall, Bertie realised that he had been lucky. If he had not caught himself in time, the incident could have been severe, possibly life-altering. His heart filled with gratitude at his good fortune, and a renewed determination solidified within him. He knew he needed to take proactive steps to avoid such situations in the future. He owed it to himself to prioritise his safety, especially in his golden years.

Animations of Despair

Day 90. It’s hard to believe I was once a concept artist. Now, a woman trying to make sense of the end of days. The last few months have been a haze of fear, regret, and desolation. I remember the time when I used to create art for a world that had a future. Now all I sketch are memories of a time long past.

I was part of the team responsible for bringing to life the advanced AI technology at Saviour Incorporated. Working in tandem with a video production company located in Melbourne, I created the look and feel of the technology that was to revolutionise our world.

As I write this, I can’t help but reflect on the irony. Our team, working in tandem, created a technology that was meant to foster unity, to bring us closer. Instead, it led to our downfall. But one thing is clear; the downfall was not of technology, but of human greed and ignorance.

We’re now the authors of humanity’s darkest chapter, and as I sketch the bleak horizon from our bunker, I remember the time when I used to paint a world full of hope.

I had heard about these boats in school, but I had never seen one in action before. Intrigued, I swam closer to get a better look. I had my friends, my family, and an entire world beneath the waves to explore. With that realisation, I immediately swam away from the fishing boat, back to my mermaid community and the vibrant coral reefs.
